Time has not been kind to post-rock, a mostly instrumental brand of indie that combined prog, noise, electronic and jam elements for a swirling brew that ruled the underground for a few minutes at the turn of the millennium. Still, one of the key groups from that scene is back, as Canadian collective Godspeed You! Black Emperor is back after a seven year hiatus. In an online statement, they announced that not only will they be curating the All Tomorrow’s Parties festival in the U.K. but they’ll also play a handful of other dates in Europe as well as nine American cities. It’s an exciting time for anybody who loves fuzz and volume.

Godspeed You! Black Emperor don’t have a ton of recorded material, though their 2000 album Lift Your Skinny Fists Like Antennas to Heaven is largely considered a cornerstone of the whole genre (along with the likes of Tortoise’s Millions Now Living Will Never Die, Slint’s Spiderland and Mogwai’s Come On Die Young). But the band is also notable for being one of the best groups to ever slip a punctuation mark in the middle of their name (the location of which has tripped up copy editors for decades). They would certainly have a headlining slot on the following festival of musical punctuation all-stars.

Panic! at the Disco
Since the band’s debut album A Fever You Can’t Sweat Out debuted in 2005, they have been the definitive punctuation group. Is it any wonder that the group fell apart when they briefly dropped the exclamation mark from their name?

Against Me!
The Florida arena-aggro-punkers need the exclamation point for added emphasis. You’re not just against me — you’re against me.

Frente!
This underrated female-fronted Australian alt-rock band stuck mostly to acoustic instruments (their biggest hit was an unplugged cover of New Order’s “Bizarre Love Triangle”), so the added emphasis let everybody know they meant business.

Therapy?
They say it’s bad luck to put a question mark in the title of a film (that’s why “Who Framed Roger Rabbit” doesn’t have proper punctuation), but it worked out just fine for this alternative metal band from Northern Ireland.

Wham!
The word “Wham” certainly packs a lot of punch, so in this case the punctuation would probably be considered overkill. Still, it’s hard to argue with “Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go.”

!!!
These post-funkers are so committed to punctuation that they eliminated words entirely.

?uestlove
Is there a finer use of the question mark than at the beginning of Roots drummer Ahmir Thompson’s professional name?

…And You Will Know Us by the Trail of Dead
It’s possible that the rare ellipsis is what forced this progressive punk act to destroy all their equipment for years.

Man or Astro-Man?
The robo-surf act (who may or may not be from outer space) are confused about their own origin, and they express as much in their name.

After a seemingly endless absence from golf (and from the public spotlight in general), Tiger Woods has returned to the game that made him into one of the most recognizable celebrities on the planet. The Masters, one of golf’s crown jewels, kicks off on Thursday (April 8), but Woods hit the links today for a bit of practice in his first public display of golf in months. Following his public apology and a series of low-key interviews, Woods is ready to get back to business, and the golf world couldn’t be happier. Despite his long layoff, Woods is expected to be a top contender in this year’s tournament, and some experts are saying that he should be considered the favorite to win another iconic green jacket (it would be the fifth in his career) and his first major win since his epic defeat of Rocco Mediate at the 2008 U.S. Open Championship.

Like any great athlete making a comeback, Woods will need a handful of theme songs. He need look no further than the video playlist below, which features hits like Shout Out Louds‘ “The Comeback,” Mase‘s “Welcome Back,” Hall and Oates’ “How Does It Feel to Be Back” and Baby Bash’s “Baby I’m Back.” Once he has made his entrance, he’s got plenty of golf-themed songs to fall back on, including Michael Martin Murphey’s “Big Iron” (not actually about golf clubs), Panic! at the Disco‘s “That Green Gentleman” (not actually about Masters winners) and Deftones‘ “Be Quiet and Drive” (not actually about opening tee shots).

To really get things started, Woods needs to turn to an old chestnut in LL Cool J‘s “Mama Said Knock You Out,” which not only opens with the immortal line “Don’t call it a comeback/ I’ve been here for years” but is also the portrait of a hungry guy looking to get back on top — not unlike Tiger himself.

The voting for the Elite Eight round of the MTV News Musical March Madness tournament continues until 10 p.m. EST Thursday night (April 1), and the race to the Final Four is tight and intense. Tokio Hotel, Muse, My Chemical Romance and Coheed and Cambria are all the front-runners, but each of their opponents — Owl City, the White Stripes, Panic! at the Disco and Alice in Chains, respectively — could make a late-round run for an upset. Check out the video below of the full breakdown of the Elite Eight.

While you’re voting for your favorite bands to push them into the Final Four (you can check out all of the still-open polls at this link), be sure to take a look at the Elite Eight gallery, which puts each of the bands left in the tournament in a basketball-themed context. Who knew that Panic! at the Disco frontman Brendon Urie had such Globetrotter-esque ball skills?

It’s Musical March Madness! The sprawling bracket — both a parody and a tribute to the NCAA basketball tournament, masterminded by MTV News’ James Montgomery — takes the 65 biggest names in rock, splits them up into four regions, assigns them seeds and puts them up against one another in a single-elimination series of match-ups in a winner-take-all contest. We’re leaving it to you to decide an actual champ in this field of 65. Over the next few weeks, we will present a series of polls that will allow you to vote for the match-ups presented in MTV News’ Band Bracketology. You vote for the winners, we’ll keep advancing the seeds and, in the end, we’ll have some sort of champion. What will the winner receive? Little more than our esteem (as well as that of the fans) and some Internet bragging rights.

Sweet 16 voting closed on Tuesday night, which means that we’re into the Elite Eight round of the MTV News Musical March Madness tournament. Check out the summary of the Sweet 16 voting, check out our awesome hoops-centric photo gallery below and then ready your clicking fingers to cast your votes for the regional finals. Voting will close Thursday night (April 1) at 10 p.m. EST. We begin this round in the West, where the closest race of the tournament was decided at the eleventh hour.

(5) My Chemical Romance vs. (15) Panic! at the Disco
The Sweet 16 saw My Chemical Romance top 30 Seconds to Mars in an absolute barn burner. Jared Leto’s group jumped out to an early lead, but a late onslaught from MCR pushed them over the top, finishing a mere 300 votes ahead of their rivals. Meanwhile, Panic! at the Disco had an unexpectedly easy walk over former member Ryan Ross’ new group the Young Veins. Now two of the loudest and most intense fan bases left in the tournament square off for a place in the Final Four. Who will win?

There won’t be any new polls put out today, but the voting for the Sweet 16 round of MTV News’ Musical March Madness continues today. All polls will close at 10 p.m. on Tuesday night (March 30), at which point the Elite Eight will be set. Most of the Sweet 16 match-ups are still pretty tight, so even if you’re favorite band is behind in the standings, there’s plenty of time to stage a comeback with some well-organized clicking. Take a look at how we got here, and then give a gander at the current slate of games.

(6) Phish vs. (15) Coheed and Cambria
A heated head-to-head. Coheed and Cambria currently leads the race, but the Phish fans in the comments section keep declaring “P.A.W.: Phish Always Win.” Can they follow through on their promise?

(9) Adam Lambert vs. (13) Alice in Chains
The grunge veterans currently have a commanding lead over Lambert, though you can never count the Glamberts out of any competition involving their favorite “Idol” star.

(2) Muse vs. (14) AFI
AFI went on an early run, but the people who turned Muse into a stadium-filling international phenomenon have also put them ahead in the standings. But it’s still anybody’s game.

(4) The White Stripes vs. (9) Patrick Stump
Despite the fact that they don’t technically exist, the White Stripes ran out to a big lead over Stump (people are apparently really into that documentary where Jack White invades Canada). But Stump has come from behind before, so a little hustle can put him over the top.

(14) The Young Veins vs. (15) Panic! at the Disco
What was supposed to be a wire-to-wire thrillfest has been a bit of a letdown, as Panic! at the Disco are soundly defeating Ryan Ross’ new project. Can Young Veins supporters stage the comeback to end all comebacks?

(5) My Chemical Romance vs. (9) 30 Seconds to Mars
This is the tilt to end all tilts. Don’t be surprised if this one gets taken to overtime, as there have already been a handful of lead changes and the two are separated by only a few hundred votes. This is truly a war between two incredibly passionate fan bases, but will the Echelon prevail or can the MCRmy advance?

(4) Vampire Weekend vs. (16) Tokio Hotel
Though Vampire Weekend lead early and put up a good fight, they have been overwhelmed by Tokio Hotel’s massive legions of mobilizing Internet fans. Can the little indie band that could overcome another obstacle?

(3) Owl City vs. (7) MGMT
Owl City continue their run and have a decent lead on MGMT, but the recent release of MGMT’s new video and the anticipation over their new album could work in their favor.

It’s Musical March Madness! We’re leaving it to you to decide an actual champ in this field of 65. Over the next few weeks, we will present a series of polls that will allow you to vote for the match-ups presented in MTV News’ Band Bracketology.
The East bracket of the Sweet 16 is already in play, and now it’s time to move on to the West. Any of the bands left in this section of the tournament could win the whole thing, but only one will win the section and advance to the Final Four.

(14) The Young Veins vs. (15) Panic! at the Disco
This was inevitable. The two splintered sides of Panic! at the Disco meet in the Sweet 16, though Ryan Ross’ Young Veins had to stage a comeback against Weezer in order to get here. Panic! at the Disco have walked through the first two rounds, but will they be caught off-guard?

(5) My Chemical Romance vs. (9) 30 Seconds to Mars
30 Seconds to Mars dispatched of the last top-seeded group during the second round as they knocked off Blink-182. My Chemical Romance faced a tight race from Pearl Jam, but ultimately overcame the surge from the grunge veterans. Now only one can stand along and advance to the regional finals against the winner of the Panic! at the Disco tilt. Who moves on?

The NCAA basketball tournament resumes today with Sweet 16 action, but MTV News’ Musical March Madness continues in its second round. Today we visit the West and Midwest regions, with plenty of excellent head-to-heads featuring some high-powered bands. Let’s get to the action in the West!

(7) Death Cab for Cutie vs. (15) Panic! at the Disco
With the recent release of “The Twilight Saga: New Moon” on DVD, Death Cab for Cutie have received yet another surge of good will thanks to their excellent song “Meet Me on the Equinox” that was included on the film’s soundtrack. Meanwhile, Panic! at the Disco may be a bit off the radar working on new music but have proven they still have a galvanized and devoted group of fans. Who will come out on top in this intriguing tilt?

(6) Weezer vs. (14) The Young Veins
The Young Veins are coming off a well-received performance at this year’s SXSW, but they go up against a surging Weezer squad that recovered from an injury to its star player (frontman Rivers Cuomo, who missed some action thanks to a bus accident) to make quick work of their opening round opponents. Both bands make strong cases for advancement, but which will live to fight another day?

It’s Musical March Madness! The sprawling bracket — both a parody and a tribute to the NCAA basketball tournament, masterminded by MTV News’ James Montgomery — takes the 65 biggest names in rock, splits them up into four regions, assigns them seeds and puts them up against one another in a single-elimination series of match-ups in a winner-take-all contest. We’re leaving it to you to decide an actual champ in this field of 65. Little more than our esteem (as well as that of the fans) and some Internet bragging rights.

In a stunning upset in the NCAA basketball tournament, Ohio University upset Georgetown last night in an absolute beat down. That was a 14 seed topping a three, which is pretty dramatic, but not quite as huge as the upset currently happening in the MTV News Band Bracketology tournament, where 16 seed Tokio Hotel is putting the hurt on top-seeded Coldplay in the East. Today we focus on the West bracket, featuring a number of heavy-hitters.

(2) Green Day vs. (15) Panic at the Disco
Green Day narrowly missed a top seed, as they adroitly transferred their success in the rock world to the theater world, as “American Idiot” is about to open on Broadway. Meanwhile, Panic at the Disco are a hot-starting team who hit a few roadblocks (and lost a lot of players) that is looking to make a big comeback. But can they build up enough momentum to knock off the surging Green Day?

(7) Death Cab for Cutie vs. (10) Soundgarden
After years of hiatus, Soundgarden are back with a vengeance and ready to dominate (consider them this year’s Temple). Meanwhile, Death Cab for Cutie kill with consistency (just like the Washington Huskies, with whom they share a home state). Do the veterans pull the upset or is Death Cab too quick off the dribble?

Panic at the Disco announced that they will be splitting in half, with chief songwriter Ryan Ross taking bass player Jon Walker and heading out “on a new musical excursion.” Frontman Brandon Urie and drummer Spencer Smith will continue on as Panic at the Disco, and the pair will still play their scheduled dates on the Blink-182 reunion tour (with two replacement members, of course).

Ross and Walker haven’t named their new group, nor have they given any indication what it would sound like. But Urie and Smith will reportedly finish up the already-in-progress third album. But what will all this new music sound like? For those answers, we take a look at John Norris’ conversation with the band just prior to the release of their last album. Since Pretty. Odd. had such a strong Beatles influence, Norris asked the group to name their favorite Fab Four songs, and the individual results could be very telling.

Urie and Smith both selected more psychedelic entries in the Beatles catalog (not unlike “Nine in the Afternoon”), while Walker and Ross went with more conventional tunes. Both “Octopus Garden” and “I Am the Walrus” are pop-minded tracks with big choruses — the same types of songs that make up the band’s debut A Fever You Can’t Sweat Out (like “Lying Is the Most Fun a Girl Can Have Without Taking Her Clothes Off”). So it seems like the band called Panic at the Disco will continue along the lines laid out on Pretty. Odd. and the Ross/Walker combination might be a little more straightforward.

For Panic fans, we want to know: Will you follow both new bands or are you loyal to a particular member?
