Phish Return to the Road Summer 2010 With Monster Tour

Author: Kevin O'Donnell  //  Category: Latest Music News, On Tour, Phish, Rock News

Bust your patchwork pants out of mothballs and tune-up your VW Bus. After last year’s triumphant return to summer touring, Phish have announced that they will hit the road again for a 29-date tour that kicks off June 11th in Chicago. The upcoming trek features multiple-night stands in major cities, including three back-to-back nights at the relatively intimate Greek Theatre in Berkely, California, starting August 5th. And while Phish haven’t planned have any of their trademark festivals — such as last October’s Festival 8 in Indio, California — the band has slotted in plenty of shows in more bucolic settings, such as the two-night stand at the scenic Telluride Town Park in Telluride, Colorado.

Check out photos from Phish’s Festival 8.

A ticket request period is currently underway through this Friday at 11:59 at Phish’s website; tickets will go on sale to the general public on April 2nd.

The announcement follows weeks of speculation that the jam-band kings would tour. On March 4th, bassist Mike Gordon hinted to Rolling Stone, “It’s looking like [a tour] is in the talks. We knew we wanted to wait until summer to do something.”

Of course, Phish haven’t exactly laid low over the past few days. On Monday in New York, Phish paid tribute to Hall of Fame inductees Genesis, performing note-perfect live versions of the prog-rock kings’ “Watcher of the Skies” and “No Reply At All.” If you missed that performance, expect those tunes to pop up in their set lists for the upcoming tour.

Check out a gallery of Phish-heads hanging out pre-show at the band’s Hampton reunion gig.

To get fans pumped for the upcoming tour, Phish will release a 3-D version of their Halloween festival in April. Details on theater locations and ticketing will be announced shortly; more information is available here.

Dixie Chicks Team With Eagles for First Tour in Four Years

The Dixie Chicks will hit the road for the first time in four years this summer when they team up with Eagles and Keith Urban for a co-headlining stadium trek. Urban will miss the tour’s opening show June 8th in Toronto, but will join the tour when it swings south to East Rutherford, New Jersey’s New Meadowlands Stadium on June 10th. So far, only eight June dates have been announced. For ticket information, check out Dixie Chicks’ official site.

As Rolling Stone previously reported, the Chicks’ Emily Robison and Martie Maguire recently unveiled a side project called Court Yard Hounds while waiting for singer Natalie Maines to return to the Dixie fold. “Emily and I had the itch,” Maguire says, “and every time we’d call Natalie and say ‘are you ready?’ she wasn’t ready. She wanted a clear-cut break.” Robison and Maguire reiterated in January that the Dixie Chicks weren’t disbanding.

Court Yard Hounds will make their live debut at this year’s SXSW festival — including a gig at Rolling Stone’s first-ever SXSW showcase at Austin’s the Palm Door — and release their self-titled debut album in May. The Hounds will also spend some days on the Lilith Fair bill this summer.

In addition to headlining Bonnaroo for the first time, Kings of Leon will hit the road this summer for a tour of mostly outdoor amphitheaters and sheds. The Followill boys will kick off a 31-date trek on June 5th in Atlantic City, New Jersey, before crossing the country to perform in most American cities ranging from San Diego and Phoenix to Hartford, Connecticut, and Pittsburgh. The tour wraps up on September 23rd in Dallas; tickets go on sale this Friday and Saturday. “We are stoked to get back on the road,” Nathan Followill tells Rolling Stone. “We’ve had a little break and are starting to get that itch. It will be cool to see if we can sneak in some new shit to see if the kids dig it. Late April the next musical adventure begins.”

Check out photos from Kings of Leon’s family album.

Expect demand for tickets to be high and the crowds to swell at these shows. The Kings just picked up three Grammy wins including Record of the Year for their monster hit “Use Somebody.” And their latest album Only by the Night was also certified as iTunes’ top-selling album of last year, beating out Lady Gaga’s The Fame and Taylor Swift’s Fearless. Lady Gaga Announces Massive Summer Monster Ball Arena Tour

Author: Kevin O'Donnell  //  Category: Lady Gaga, Latest Music News, On Tour, Rock News

Photo: Marsland/WireImage

Lady Gaga first announced the idea for her Monster Ball tour in October 2009, after her planned Fame Kills trek with Kanye West was canceled, and she debuted the live spectacle a month later. The singer revamped the show into a massive arena show for its European kick-off in February. And now the pop diva is upping the ante once again, announcing an ambitious 31-date summer tour that launches June 28th in Quebec. The tour will make stops at arenas in Philadelphia, New York, Cleveland, Los Angeles, Detroit and other major U.S. and Canadian markets. Tickets for most dates go on sale this Friday, March 19th, through Live Nation; special guests will be announced shortly. Fans have already noted there’s no Chicago date on the schedule, as well as a sizable hole in Gaga’s itinerary from approximately August 6-8th, lending credence to rumors that she’ll perform at the 2010 Lollapalooza fest.

Check out photos from Lady Gaga’s Monster Ball show.

Gaga — who describes the tour as the first ever “pop-electro opera” — told Rolling Stone last year the idea for the show is rooted in futuristic stage drama. “The theatrics and story elements are in the style of an opera. Imagine if you could take the sets of an opera, which are very grand and very beautiful, and put them through a pop-electro lens. The design of the show is very, very forward, very, very innovative. I’ve been thinking about ways to play with the shape of this stage and change the way that we watch things.”

Get a look at Lady Gaga’s wildest outfits.

As Rolling Stone reported from her first U.S. Monster Ball date, Gaga’s show features extreme wardrobe changes, the singer tackling numerous instruments and all of her biggest hits from The Fame and its reissue follow-up The Fame Monster. When the show returned in England, Gaga added a new narrative (she and her pals race to a party) and a 40-foot animatronic sea monster.

Last week, Lady Gaga made headlines by premiering her new video for “Telephone”, which co-stars Beyoncé and features a Quentin Tarantino-inspired narrative of sex, violence and product placement. This morning Gaga called in to Ryan Seacrest’s radio show to discuss the clip and her mutual fandom with Beyoncé.

Missed Pearl Jam live during the band’s run of Backspacer tour dates last year? Eddie Vedder and company are giving you another chance to see their legendary live show in action with a month-long slate of U.S. shows that kick off in May. The trek launches at New Orleans’ Jazz Festival on May 1st and moves its way northeast, culminating with two shows at New York’s Madison Square Garden on May 20th and 21st.

Band of Horses have been enlisted to serve as Pearl Jam’s opening act on the trek, with the Black Keys subbing in for the May 20th MSG show. Tickets go on sale to Pearl Jam’s Ten Club members on March 15th, with a public on-sale to follow on March 19th. As evidenced by last year’s tour and the group’s legendary Halloween night show in Philadelphia, Pearl Jam mix up their set lists every night and the 2009 jaunt yielded live performances of nearly every song in the PJ catalog, so don’t miss them this time around. For more info, check out Pearl Jam’s official site.

And if you’re bummed out that Pearl Jam isn’t visiting your half of the U.S., at least you can watch them perform on Saturday Night Live this weekend.

Conan O’Brien Joins Bonnaroo, Announces “Legally Prohibited” Tour

Author: Daniel Kreps  //  Category: Bonnaroo, Latest Music News, On Tour, Rock News

NBC may have stripped Conan O’Brien of his Tonight Show and contractually barred him from temporarily appearing on television, but the red-headed host has found another way to get in front of his legion of fans: Bonnaroo. O’Brien posted on his newborn Twitter page today to reveal he’s hitting the road. “Hey Internet: I’m headed to your town on a half-assed comedy & music tour,” he tweeted. One of the last stops on the trek is a June 11th performance at Bonnaroo, where Conan will entertain nearly 60,000 festival-goers in Manchester, Tennessee — a perfect venue to reprise his final-episode “Free Bird”.

Check out Conan and more comics on the cover of Rolling Stone.

O’Brien has already proven his ability to rock, so don’t be surprised if Conan picks up a guitar at some point and jams out with other ‘Roo artists like Jeff Beck, Weezer, Flaming Lips, Tenacious D and, if we’re really lucky, sing Alicia Keys’ part in “Empire State of Mind” during Jay-Z’s headlining set. In addition to performing at the fest’s Comedy Theatre, O’Brien will emcee Bonnaroo’s “What” stage on Friday and Saturday nights. Joining O’Brien at the fest will be Aziz Ansari (hopefully as Raaaaaaaandy), Margaret Cho, Greg Giraldo, Rob Huebel, Bo Burnham and Jeffrey Ross, who will “roast” Bonnaroo during his set.

O’Brien’s “The Legally Prohibited From Being Funny on Television” tour will kick off April 12th in Oregon and work its way across the country before concluding in Atlanta on June 14th. For all the ticket info, check out the Team Coco site.

Faith No More Announce First East Coast Reunion Show

Author: Daniel Kreps  //  Category: Latest Music News, On Tour, Rock News

Photo: Attenborough/WireImage

Faith No More have finally revealed their first East Coast U.S. concert in over a decade: Mike Patton and his reunited crew will invade Williamsburg, Brooklyn’s Waterfront on July 5th. As Rolling Stone previously reported, after extensively touring Europe in 2009, the band recently announced their first U.S. date, a first-night performance at Coachella on April 17th, as well as a three-night stand at San Francisco’s Warfield April 12-14th.

So far, no other East Coast dates have been announced, but it’s unlikely many U.S. dates will follow the July 5th show as Faith No More will set off for Lisbon and other European cities beginning July 8th. Tickets for the Brooklyn show, which will benefit the Open Space Alliance for North Brooklyn, go on sale March 19th, with a special fan presale taking place March 16th. Kate Nash Talks “My Best Friend Is You,” Announces Spring Tour

Author: Nicole Frehsee  //  Category: Latest Music News, On Tour, Rock News

After releasing her hit 2007 debut Made of Bricks, Kate Nash got sick of her career. “Touring and doing loads of work all the time was a drag, and I became unenthusiastic about it,” says the British indie-pop singer. “I took a lot of time off so that I could do, like, normal things: hang out with friends, watch films, read books.” Now, Nash is ready for round two: her second album, My Best Friend Is You, will be out April 20th, and six days later, she’ll kick off a nine-date North American tour.

On her new LP, Nash lightens up on her trademark piano pop in favor of slightly punky, girl-group-inspired tunes like “Do Wah Doo” (watch the video above!) and “Kiss the Grrrl” — a nod to her recent obsession with Billy Childish poems (”I love the harshness and dirtiness of them”) and the Shirelles, the Chiffons and the Ronettes. “These girl-group songs sound really joyous, but the lyrics are quite dark and heartbreaking,” she says. With that dichotomy in mind, Nash and her producer, ex-Suede guitarist Bernard Butler, crafted deceivingly upbeat songs like “I’ve Got a Secret,” about coming out of the closet. (Nash also plays drums on the song.) “Someone close to me was going through that recently, and it was a stressful situation,” she says. “It’s sad that someone would have to defend themselves for being gay in 2010.”

This summer, Nash will hit the road for a few dates with the all-female traveling festival Lilith Fair. “It’s really exciting, because it has a great history rather than just being a big party,” says Nash. “It’s a lot of girl power.”

Simon & Garfunkel Confirm Spring North American Tour

Author: Rolling Stone  //  Category: Latest Music News, On Tour, Rock News, Simon & Garfunkel

Photo: Mazur/WireImage

Last week, Rolling Stone wondered if Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel were putting together a North American tour after shows in North Dakota and Minnesota hit Ticketmaster. Today the duo confirmed the news, announcing a 13-date North American trek that kicks off with their April 24th gig at New Orleans’ Jazz & Heritage Festival. Though most of the stops will focus on Canada, the iconic folk duo will hit Saint Paul, Minnesota; Fargo, North Dakota; Madison, Wisconsin, and Detroit. Most dates go on sale March 12th at 10 am.

Simon and Garfunkel — who split 1970 and reunited for sporadic performances over the years — hit the road in 2003 for the massively popular “Old Friends” tour, selling out 12 of 14 U.S. dates and grossing over $2 million dollars per city, according to Pollstar. Most recently, the pair got together in November to perform at the 25th Anniversary Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Concert at New York’s Madison Square Garden, where they delivered a rousing rendition of “Cecilia.”

On the upcoming trek, Simon and Garfunkel will focus on songs from their classic catalog, although the duo promise to spice up their set lists with material from both Simon and Garfunkel’s respective solo catalogs.

Simon & Garfunkel Planning U.S. Tour? New Dates Announced

Author: Daniel Kreps  //  Category: Latest Music News, On Tour, Rock News, Simon & Garfunkel

Photo: Mazur/WireImage
It appears as though the New Orleans Jazz Fest won’t be Simon & Garfunkel’s “only” U.S. appearance of 2010: Both Minnesota’s Star Tribune and North Dakota’s Grand Forks Herald report that the duo will perform at Fargo’s Fargodome on May 7th and the Twin Cities’ Xcel Energy Centre on May 8th in what appears to be the first dates of a possible U.S. tour. As Rolling Stone previously reported, prior to both those shows, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame pair will perform at the New Orleans Jazz Fest on April 24th. (A rep for Jazz Fest tells RS their press release touting the show as the pair’s sole U.S. gig was accurate when it was issued in January.)

The sporadically updated Simon & Garfunkel official Website has not yet confirmed the two new dates, but Ticketmaster postings reveal that tickets for the shows go on sale March 13th, so the shows appear to be legit. (That is unless it’s that other Paul Simon who’s been making the rounds.) According to the Winnpeg Free Press, Simon & Garfunkel will also play their first ever show in that Canadian city on May 5th. Previously, the pair performed at the Rock Hall 25th Anniversary concerts at Madison Square Garden.

Relive the Rock Hall’s anniversary concerts’ epic team-ups in photos.

Billy Joel Dismisses Rumors He Yanked Tour With Elton John

Author: Austin Scaggs  //  Category: Latest Music News, On Tour, Rock News

Photo: Flanigan/FilmMagic
“There was never a tour booked this summer!” says Billy Joel, responding to Internet claims that he pulled the plug on a summer tour with Elton John. He continues, “Obviously, this has the smell of a really juicy story: ‘Why did they cancel? Did Billy and Elton have a fight? What’s going on?’ The truth is, there’s nothing going on. I had made up my mind a long time ago that I wasn’t going to work this year.”

Though the duo are currently performing together on their recurring Face to Face tour, these shows — which swept up the West Coast, and continue until March 11th in Buffalo — are make-up shows, rescheduled from canceled 2009 dates. Joel insists that rumors about 2010 summer tour were leaked by insiders at certain venues around the country. He explains, “There were a couple stories that came out that we were supposed to play Wrigley Field and Fenway Park, and I think Pittsburgh was mentioned. Booking agents hold real estate. They like to research what’s available when, to see if they can put together a series of dates. Then they’ll come back to the artist and say, ‘Look, if you wanted to, you could play such and such and such.’ These rumors probably came from somebody at one of those venues who had to be a big shot and call the local newspaper and say, ‘Hey, Billy and Elton are going to play here this summer.’ ”

Elton John even perpetuated the story himself. In a recent interview, he was quoted saying, “Billy just wants to take a year off. I’m so disappointed because when we came to Wrigley Field last year, it was like playing in the church of baseball.” Joel responds, “Elton and I don’t really sit down and discuss our future plans with each other. We see each other backstage and we hang out and kibitz and talk about music and life. When Elton did that interview, he’d just found out from his booking agent that I wasn’t going to be working this summer, and therefore Elton’s quote puts a spin on it that I’d changed my mind all of a sudden, or suddenly decided to cancel the tour, which is nonsense. There was never a tour booked!”

Before their February 22nd show in Denver, Joel approached John about his comments to the press. “When I saw him backstage, I said, ‘Elton, what were you told about this supposed summer tour?’ He goes, ‘Well, I just found out you weren’t going to be working this year, and I was heartbroken because I was looking forward to doing it.’ ” In his statement to the press, John also seemed to convey that their hugely successful Face to Face tour — which has brought in big crowds since 2004 — would be ending for good in Albany. “We’ll probably pick it up again,” says Joel. “It’s always fun playing with him.” He insists there is no bad blood. In Denver, their conversation ended thusly: “Elton said, ‘Are you mad at me?’ I said, ‘No, I’m not mad, I just want to clarify what’s going on here.’ Everything’s fine.”

Joel says the thought of retirement looms in his mind, but he’s always drawn back to the stage. “I see pictures of myself onstage, and I look at them and say, ‘There has to be some kind of mandatory retirement age for doing this gig,’ and then I watched the Super Bowl and saw the Who and I figure, ‘Well, I guess there is no mandatory retirement age.’ ‘I hope I die before I get old,’ — that went out the window. It’s always possible that I’ll tour again, whether it’s with Elton or on my own. I love my job. For now I’m going to stop, but I won’t sit around for the rest of my life and rot.”

Joel claims last year was a rough one. “There was an incident with my daughter that was very shocking,” he says of daughter Alexa’s suicide attempt. “I got divorced. I worked a lot. I promised myself more personal time this year. I’m going to Italy, and I’ll probably go to Paris. I’ll probably take my boat to New England and hang out on the coast. I’ll ride my motorcycle. I’ll just be a bum.”

Thom Yorke Confirms Tour With Atoms For Peace Side Project

Thom Yorke revealed today that his side project previously known as ???? will hit the road this April under its new official name, Atoms For Peace. Yorke assembled the live outlet to bring his 2006 solo album The Eraser to the stage, and debuted the band — which features Red Hot Chili Peppers bassist Flea, producer Nigel Godrich, Beck drummer Joey Waronker and percussionist Mauro Refosco — during a string of shows in Los Angeles last year. (Click here to read our review of Yorke’s first official solo show.)

In a radio interview last month Yorke promised the ???? band would get together for additional shows. “We had too much fun to just leave it there,” Yorke writes now on Radiohead’s Dead Air Space. The previous performances boasted tracks from The Eraser, rare Radiohead songs like “Super Collider” and “Paperbag Writer” plus a handful of new songs like “Judge, Jury & Executioner” and “Open the Floodgates.” One of those new songs, “Lotus Flower,” was performed by Radiohead last month during a special Haiti benefit concert in Los Angeles.

Atoms For Peace kick off their trek with two shows at New York’s Roseland Ballroom and then slowly creep back west; the tour is currently set to wrap with the Coachella performance on April 18th. As for why Yorke chose Atoms For Peace, the title of a song on The Eraser, as the name for the band, it just “seemed bleedin’ obvious,” the Radiohead frontman writes. Tickets go on sale to Radiohead’s Waste club members starting March 2nd, with the public onsale March 5th.

Aerosmith Reconcile to Announce “Cocked, Locked” Tour of Europe

Author: Daniel Kreps  //  Category: Latest Music News, On Tour, Rock News, aerosmith

After months of squabbles and talk of a split between Steven Tyler and the band he’s fronted for four decades, Aerosmith have reconciled and announced a “Cocked, Locked, Ready to Rock” summer tour of Europe with a cheeky online video. Winking at the group’s very public troubles, guitarist Joe Perry says, “You know what, the rumors are true … I think.” Tyler replies, “I just auditioned and I got the gig. We’re coming your way and rocking your world. Look out baby, ’cause here we go again!”

As Rolling Stone reported just three weeks ago, Tyler’s attorney threatened legal action against his Aerosmith bandmates if they embarked on a tour with another singer — a real possibility, according to statements from the band indicating they were unwilling to wait for Tyler to rejoin them for more gigs. The band agreed to meet on February 9th to discuss the future of the and, and judging by the high spirits in their tour-announcement video, the group realized they rock harder together than apart. (Brad Whitford is missing from the video, but the Aerosmith site lists him among the members jetting to Europe.)

After an injury-plagued summer tour in 2009 that prematurely ended when Tyler fell off the stage during an August performance in South Dakota, the band hit the rocks again when he told the press he wanted to spend two years working on his own projects. Unwilling to wait, Perry said the band would recruit a new singer. However, upon signing with new management and entering rehab in December to deal with a prescription pill addiction, Tyler said in a statement, “I wish to set the record straight and say that I have read reports of a rumored two-year hiatus and want to be clear that this is completely false and I will enthusiastically be writing, recording and performing with Aerosmith as soon as things are handled.”

While Aerosmith were testing out singers like Billy Idol and Paul Rodgers (but not Lenny Kravitz), Tyler was entertaining Home Depot shoppers and karaoke singers with a pair of impromptu performances. But it seems the band’s tumultuous six months have come to an end, and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame group will retake the stage on June 10th with a performance at Sweden’s Rock Festival.

“Back by popular demand with more spit and fire than ever before, we’re coming across the pond and parting the waters as we go,” Tyler says in a statement on the band’s Aero Smith One site. Adds drummer Joey Kramer, “Aerosmith is back! Bigger, better and stronger than ever! So look out Europe, cuz we’re comin’ to get cha.” And Perry concludes, “Enough BS — we’re coming and everything is going to be set at 11.”

Public Image Ltd. Announce First U.S. Tour in 18 Years

Author: Daniel Kreps  //  Category: Latest Music News, On Tour, Rock News

It’s been 18 long years since John Lydon and his Public Image Ltd. outfit have toured the United States, but ever since Coachella’s organizers announced the band would performing on the festival’s opening night, we’ve had our fingers crossed that the one-off show would turn into a full-fledged tour of North America (We were begging for a PiL reunion back in ‘08.) Now we finally have good news: today Public Image Ltd. revealed a 17-date trek that will take them from California to New York with a dozen stops in between.

As Rolling Stone previously reported, Lydon and Public Image Ltd. reunited late last year for a series of shows in the U.K., and as evidenced by the performance of “Rise” up top, Lydon still sounds great tearing through material from Album and First Issue. Those U.K. shows marked PiL’s first concerts in 17 years, when the band toured in support of their last album, 1992’s That What Is Not. While the days of guitarist Keith Levene and bassist Jah Wobble rocking with PiL have passed, the current lineup includes drummer Bruce Smith and guitarist Lu Simmonds, both PiL vets dating back to 1986, and new bassist Scott Frith.

Lydon and company promise more U.S. dates will be announced in the near future, so don’t despair if your local market isn’t on the current itinerary:

Paul McCartney Announces First “Up and Coming” Tour Dates

Author: Daniel Kreps  //  Category: Latest Music News, On Tour, Paul McCartney, Rock News

Photo: Mazur/WireImage

After a 2009 that featured a headlining set at Coachella and the inaugural concerts at New York’s Citi Field, Paul McCartney will return to the stage this year with his “Up and Coming” tour, which will stop at unique venues and rarely visited cities throughout the U.S. The trek begins March 28th at Phoenix, Arizona’s Jobing.com Arena, marking the first time McCartney has visited the state since his 2005 tour. On March 30th, McCartney returns to the Hollywood Bowl for the first time since 1993. The exclusive pre-sale for both shows is going on now at McCartney’s official Website, with a general public onsale scheduled for February 28th.

McCartney promises more shows are on tap for 2010. Rumors have been circulating in recent weeks about the Beatle possibly performing at Chicago’s Wrigley Field this summer, but so far that has not been confirmed. Like last year’s concerts, which were documented on the live album Good Evening New York City, the 2010 shows will feature music from McCartney’s entire catalog, from the Beatles to Wings to his most recent Fireman album, Electric Arguments. A press release hints that new songs never before performed by McCartney will also be on the set list, including the track “(I Want To) Come Home,” his contribution to the Everybody’s Fine soundtrack.
