On Sunday night (March 28), over 72,000 people gathered at University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale, Arizona to witness WrestleMania XXVI. That’s a tremendous audience, but still short of the WrestleMania record. On this day in 1987, WrestleMania III came to the Pontiac Silverdome in Pontiac, Michigan, where Andre the Giant challenged Hulk Hogan for the heavyweight championship. Total attendance on that day? A reported 93,173, a figure that has been disputed over time but still stands as the record for largest indoor attendance for a live sporting event in North America.

WrestleMania III represented the pinnacle of the wrestling boom in the 1980s. Hogan was one of the most recognizable stars in the world, but a number of members of the World Wrestling Federation roster had claims to mainstream fame, including “Rowdy” Roddy Piper, Randy “Macho Man” Savage and the Iron Sheik. Though the show in 1987 featured appearances by the likes of Aretha Franklin and Alice Cooper, the real stars were in the main event. The match between Hogan and Andre was storytelling at its most pure. It centered around one question: Could the Hulkster pick up and slam his 525 pound opponent? Hogan went for the slam early in the match but fell backwards under Andre’s weight. The Giant kept the advantage for most of the rest of the match, until Hogan managed to stage a comeback and get Andre off his feet. It’s a remarkable moment — watch as everybody in the background jump up to their feet when Andre gets up. It’ll give you goosebumps. You know what will also give you goosebumps? Mastodon‘s “Sleeping Giant,” this morning’s ode to the late Andre.

It's Musical March Madness!
It’s Musical March Madness! The sprawling bracket — both a parody and a tribute to the NCAA basketball tournament, masterminded by MTV News’ James Montgomery — takes the 65 biggest names in rock, splits them up into four regions, assigns them seeds and puts them up against one another in a single-elimination series of match-ups in a winner-take-all contest. We’re leaving it to you to decide an actual champ in this field of 65. Over the next few weeks, we will present a series of polls that will allow you to vote for the match-ups presented in MTV News’ Band Bracketology. You vote for the winners, we’ll keep advancing the seeds and, in the end, we’ll have some sort of champion. What will the winner receive? Little more than our esteem (as well as that of the fans) and some Internet bragging rights.

Last night’s NCAA basketball games featured a tremendous double overtime tilt featuring Kansas State and Xavier, as well as Butler’s upset over top-ranked Syracuse. The voting in Musical March Madness remains aggressive, and most of the second round voting remains tight. Today, we plow through the South bracket in preparation for the Sweet 16 on Monday.

(10) Mastodon vs. (15) Coheed and Cambria
Both bands pulled off first round upsets using their individual brands of prog-friendly headbanging. Now they are entrenched in a great second round tilt. This is a great section of the tournament, because no matter who wins either of these games, the Sweet 16 will have a metal versus jam showdown that will be epic.

(3) Dave Matthews Band vs. (6) Phish
Two of the jam universe’s biggest titans won their first round match-ups handily, but only one can stand alone. A longshot prediction: Whoever wins this match-up will make a run to the finals. But which one will it be?

It’s Musical March Madness! The sprawling bracket — both a parody and a tribute to the NCAA basketball tournament, masterminded by MTV News’ James Montgomery — takes the 65 biggest names in rock, splits them up into four regions, assigns them seeds and puts them up against one another in a single-elimination series of match-ups in a winner-take-all contest. Little more than our esteem (as well as that of the fans) and some Internet bragging rights.

It’s the final day of the opening round, and while the polls are still open on a handful of the other races, today’s match-ups focus on the South region — perhaps the toughest in the entire tournament. Top-seeded Kings of Leon are a powerhouse, for sure, but can they survive the onslaught from the rest of the pack? Let’s take a look at the first two pairings of the day.

(2) Paramore vs. (15) Coheed and Cambria
Paramore narrowly missed scoring a top seed, as they have been on a tremendous streak since last year’s release of Brand New Eyes. But Coheed and Cambria are due for a surge, as their new album Year of the Black Rainbow (a prequel to the story told in their other albums due to hit stores on April 13) is a fantastic piece of post-hardcore prog. Both bands have singers with great hair, but which one will advance?

(7) All Time Low vs. (10) Mastodon
Like the above match-up, this is a competition between slick pop shine and brutal execution. Baltimore pop-punkers All Time Low had a great 2009, scoring big with their album Nothing Personal and the single “Damned If I Do Ya (Damned If I Don’t),” while Mastodon remain one of the most respected and revered metal bands in the world (driven home by the power of 2009′s Crack the Skye). Who will make enough noise to move on to round two?

Rock memorabilia can be pretty limited: There are T-shirts, hoodies, the odd hat and the occasional piece of underwear. But fantastically intense metal band Mastodon have diversified their band-associated swag portfolio.

First, they’ve developed their own beer. With the help of German brewery Mahr’s Bräu, the band developed a limited-edition lager that was only available to the band and the people surrounding them at Sonisphere, a festival also featuring Metallica, Limp Bizkit, Linkin Park and Nine Inch Nails. Only 200 bottles were produced, and there aren’t currently any plans to make any more.

But if you really want to own a unique piece of Mastodon, then you have options, like these sneakers that use album art. The shoes — two pairs of high-tops and two pairs of slides — borrow the art from the group’s 2006 album Blood Mountain and are currently available for pre-order (though they’re supposed to be fully-available today). The kicks will set you back $89 (with the low-tops available for $73) plus the cost of shipping from the U.K. Like anything this cool, there are only a limited number of pairs available, but if you’re serious about being a member of the “Colony of Birchmen,” you’ll be first in line.
