Season 5 finalist Bucky Covington has released a new single, "Gotta Be Somebody." The song is a #1 hit for Nickelback, written by band members Chad Kroeger and Ryan Peake, along with co-producer Joey Moi. "Gotta Be Somebody" is the new single from Bucky's upcoming sophomore album, I'm Alright, releasing spring 2010. The music video for the single was shot during Bucky's recent hometown concert in Rockingham, North Carolina. The music video should also be available online and on TV video outlets within the next month.

We caught up with Bucky last week. He opened up about the Rockingham concert, his upcoming album, and "Gotta Be Somebody." Read the full interview.

Five Rappers Who Should Follow DMX Into MMA

Author: Kyle Anderson  //  Category: Latest Music News

Rappers testing their mettle in the sports world isn't new (remember Master P's brief attempt to break into the NBA with the Hornets?), but DMX's sojourn into the world of athletics might be the most intense yet. X will head to Alabama in December to step into a cage for a mixed martial arts fight. His opponent is a guy named Eric Martinez, a member of X's management team who actually has one professional MMA win under his belt.

X has never fought before, though he's no stranger to the UFC, as Chuck Liddell, the organization's most high-profile champion during its rise, used a DMX song as his entrance music for many of his biggest fights. As more and more former NFL players turn to the fight game (1982 Heisman Trophy winner Herschel Walker just signed a fight contract), rappers won't be far behind. Here are the five other MCs who should learn a little jiu-jitsu and step into the cage.

Juelz Santana
The former Dipset member participated in BET's "The Iron Ring," a reality show that combined hip-hop and MMA. Though his team didn't come out on top in the end, Santana showed a nose for the game and has deceptive size that could help him master a little kickboxing.
Entrance Song: "Mic Check," because this is pay-per-view!

50 Cent
50's already gigantic, so he might as well use those muscles for something other than flexing in funny dis videos. Plus, we already know he has a knack for promotion. All 50 would have to do is learn some basic boxing and mix in a little wrestling and he could be the next Brock Lesnar.
Entrance Song: "I Get Money," because it worked for Floyd "Money" Mayweather.

Kanye West
Kanye's a deceptively large guy, and he could parlay his natural wiliness into a fight style that would keep people on their toes. Even if he doesn't intend to fight for real, West should really start learning Muay Thai just to mess with some heads.
Entrance Song: "Stronger," because it's super-badass.

Eminem
He's the greatest battle MC of this generation, so why wouldn't he also be the best cage fighter as well? Slim Shady had to learn a thing or two about defending himself as a kid in Detroit and has been an underdog most of his life, so he's already got the warrior's spirit. A few lessons in grappling could make him a dominant force.
Entrance Song: "Lose Yourself," the definitive sports psych-up track of this century.

The Game
The Game's got a lot going for him: He already shares a moniker with pro wrestler Triple H (not an MMA fighter, but certainly knows what to do with his fists) and he was one of the more dominant playable characters in the video game "Def Jam Icon" (which pit various rappers against each other in "Street Fighter"-esque combat). The Game is a stylistic chameleon, which probably means he could adapt and incorporate a number of different fighting disciplines. Maybe he should start with judo?
Entrance Song: "Hate It or Love It"

New Music Report: Avett Brothers, Plus La Roux

Author: Rolling Stone  //  Category: Latest Music News

Rolling Stone’s Kevin O’Donnell spotlights the Avett Brothers’ major-label debut, I and Love and You, in this week’s roundup of essential new releases. The North Carolina trio get an assist from Rick Rubin on the disc, which results in polished songs including upbeat jams and pretty piano ballads, like the title track, which shows off brothers Scott and Seth Avett’s Beatlesque harmonies.

Also out: the self-titled debut from La Roux, a next big thing from Britain who churn out Eighties-style pop made of cheap synths, skittering beats and cheap come-ons from sassy frontwoman Elly Jackson. The best track: “In for the Kill,” a tune that would rock as the theme for the next James Bond movie.

Adam Lambert?s Album Preorder Tops Amazon Sales Chart

Author: Daniel Kreps  //  Category: Latest Music News

Adam Lambert’s debut album isn’t due out until November 24th, but already the RS cover star is Number One on Amazon.com. Four days after the pre-order option was made available on Lambert’s still-untitled disc, or New Album 2009 as Amazon calls it, the American Idol runner-up is tops on Amazon’s Bestsellers list, ahead of new releases by Mariah Carey, Madonna, the Beatles and more. That’s pretty impressive, and a testament to Lambert’s fervent fanbase. Lambert’s most recent tweets put him back in the studio with Linda Perry, Rob Cavallo, Ryan Tedder and Dr. Luke — all within the last week.

Go behind the scenes of Lambert’s RS cover shoot in exclusive photos.

So, how’s Season Eight champ Kris Allen doing? His debut album is due out a week before Lambert’s on November 17th, but also became available for preorder four days ago. Checking the Amazon charts, Allen is currently sits at Number 53, but that number will likely change in the next few days, when Team Allen, who helped propel their man to American Idol status, band together. The Amazon charts update hourly, so fans can write a new chapter to this story pretty quickly.

Pearl Jam Hit The Top Of The Charts For The First Time Since No Code

Author: Kyle Anderson  //  Category: Latest Music News

It looks like that Target deal paid off, as Pearl Jam have found their way to the top of the Billboard 200. The band moved 190,000 copies of their latest album Backspacer, which was available exclusively at Target stores (as well as on iTunes and via the band's Web site), in its first sales week. It marks the first time since the band has been at the top of the album chart since 1996, when the band released No Code to strong initial sales but mixed reviews. No Code remains both the band's most experimental and maligned album, as the singles were loose affairs (including the moody "Who You Are") and the album tracks brought together a lot of disparate elements.

But even though the two albums have similar cover art, Backspacer is pretty far away from No Code in a sonic sense. The band's new album represents a calmer, breezier Pearl Jam, comfortable in their own skin and just looking to knock some tunes out in the garage. They spent most of this century being difficult to love: 2000's Binaural and 2002's Riot Act were full of spiritual and political unrest, while 2006's self-titled album was an attempt at a reinvention that sounded rushed and busy.

But Backspacer is just right. In a live setting, Pearl Jam play with a joyous energy that transcends their collective age and the occasional heaviness of the material. But on record, they sometimes sound burdened. Backspacer changes all that, putting the focus squarely on the hooks, thrills and camaraderie that comes from being a musical family for so long. They even got the single right: No veteran band has ever delivered a better statement of purpose than Pearl Jam have with "The Fixer."

RapRadar’s Elliott Wilson On Hottest MCs: ‘Fabolous Stuck To The Script’

Author: MTV News  //  Category: Latest Music News

By Elliott Wilson, Founder and CEO of RapRadar.com

They say persistence overcomes resistance, and never has that been more evident than in the case of Fabolous. BK's finest young rapper has spent most of his career being overshadowed by rap heavyweights like Jay-Z, but it's his consistency that has kept him in the conversation for the past eight years.

What did F-A-B-O do so special in 2009 to finally be recognized as one of the game's hottest MCs? Man, he just stuck to the script. Loso's Way is another solid album in the guest-spot master's catalogue. Street bangers ("Imma Do It", "Lullaby") merged with commercial muscle ("Throw it in the Bag," "Everything, Everyday, Everywhere") packed with personal tales of betrayal ("Pachanga") and fatherhood ("Stay"). And on top of all that, as far as rap artists goes, he's the Twitter king. Salute him.

Metallica Offer Up Single Song Downloads at Live Music Site

Author: Daniel Kreps  //  Category: Latest Music News

Photo: Miller/FilmMagic

For five years, Metallica’s own LiveMetallica Website has offered up high-quality downloads of the band’s concerts spanning from 1982 to their current World Magnetic tour. However, fans were only able to purchase concerts as a whole, as opposed to the a la carte song options popularized by iTunes. Perhaps the Rock and Roll Hall of Famers’ hookup with Apple earlier this year rubbed off a little bit, because Metallica announced yesterday on their official Website that single song purchases are now available on LiveMetallica.

Keeping with tradition, single MP3s carry a 99-cent price tag, while purchasing the entire concert will remain $9.95, making purchasing the full show more wallet-friendly in the long run. The high-quality FLAC download will also remain $12.95. LiveMetallica features over 269 shows and, as the band points out, no two set lists are the same. If you haven’t checked out LiveMetallica yet, we recommend you do so, as there’s also dozens of free downloads of concerts spanning the band’s entire career.

You might be thinking, after the whole Napster ordeal, “Metallica? On the internet? Giving away stuff for free!?” But as Lars Ulrich told Rolling Stone’s David Fricke, the Napster situation was never about money, but about control. “Give away stuff for free? Not a problem. The Internet? Not a problem,” Ulrich said. “Who makes the decision? We make the decision. I’ll give away all my shit for free. But I’ll decide when and where and how.” Ulrich later told RS that, with the band’s record contract expired, they’d be open to the possibility of an Internet-styled release that other big-name artists have employed in recent years.

Rolling Stone caught Metallica’s tour relaunch earlier this month at Nashville’s Sommet Center, where Motorhead’s Lemmy Kilmister guested on two songs during the encore. That show, as well as all the shows so far on the Death Magnetic jaunt, is also available over at LiveMetallica.

Breaking: Cory Chisel and the Wandering Sons

Author: Rolling Stone  //  Category: Latest Music News

Who: A crew of country roots-rockers led by 27-year-old Cory Chisel, a Wisconsin-based singer-songwriter who croons like Nebraska-era Springsteen, dresses like a Deadwood extra and recorded his first EP in his family’s Minnesota cabin.

Sounds Like: Chisel’s Death Won’t Send a Letter is filled with woozy gospel organs and broadly strummed acoustic guitars, and a few famous faces — Brendan Benson co-wrote first single “Born Again,” and his Raconteurs bandmates Little Jack Lawrence and Patrick Keeler guest, along with My Morning Jacket’s Carl Broemel.

Vital Stats:

• Chisel grew up in a religious household where he was “sheltered from popular music.” An uncle who is a blues musician turned him on to Howlin’ Wolf and John Lee Hooker and Chisel eventually stumbled upon the Clash.
“It’s not a hard jump from John Lee Hooker to Joe Strummer, actually, and from there, Bob Dylan was the next step,” he says. He traded in his hockey stick for a guitar in the summer of sixth grade and whipped up his first batch of songs.

• Hesitant to say he’d ever leave the Midwest, Chisel explains nature is a critical part of his artistic process. “If you’re in a superficial environment, I think the music tends to lean that way. Something about being in the woods… it’s a critic, the environment itself,” he says. He recorded Death in Los Angeles and Nashville, where he admits he was more at home. “In L.A., I found myself thinking in the studio, ‘Shit, traffic’s going to be awful,’ all these peripheral things you don’t want to be thinking about.”

• Church music and Johnny Cash were both big influences on young Chisel, who was drawn to the emotional expansiveness of gospel and the Man in Black. “There’s this really rich vernacular of gospel music that tells these tremendous stories of suffering and joy,” he says. “I grew up not knowing if Johnny Cash was a musician or one of my grandfathers or if he was an actor… he kind of embodies everybody that I looked up to.”

Get It Now: Death Won’t Send a Letter is out now on Black Seal. Check out Chisel’s exclusive acoustic performance of “Tennessee” with Adriel Harris above. Plus, check out his video for “Born Again.”

Happy Birthday, T-Pain

Author: Kyle Anderson  //  Category: Latest Music News

It sometimes seems like singer, producer and Auto-Tune aficionado T-Pain has been around a lot longer than he actually has. But his first music only came out back in 2005, and the guy is only 26 years old. He'll almost certainly be spending his birthday — which is today — in style, as it seems like every time we see him he's either hanging out in a strip club, buying ladies dranks or rolling up to awards shows on elephants. But what do you get a guy who has everything, including a "big ass chain," his own Auto-Tune-centric iPhone app and a fine collection of top hats?

Regardless, Pain hasn't slowed his output, as he's constantly appearing in videos, guesting on songs and working on his own album Revolver, which is expected late this year or early next. But if there's any one collaborator who should buy Pain a cupcake on his birthday today, it's Busta Rhymes. Pain guested on Busta's track "Hustler's Anthem '09," and it's one of the strongest songs from Rhymes' latest album Back on My B.S., which came out earlier this year. The track is hot, but the video is even hotter: A super-saturated Hype Williams joint that taps into Busta's classic court jester vibe. So blow out your candles, T-Pain, and be proud that if nothing else, you've brought Busta back to his technicolor greatness.

Jennifer Hudson Delivers Memorable ‘Over The Rainbow’ At ‘The Wizard Of Oz’ Celebration

Author: Kyle Anderson  //  Category: Latest Music News

To celebrate the 70th anniversary of "The Wizard of Oz," the landmark 1939 film that launched the career of Judy Garland and gave songs like "Over the Rainbow" a permanent place in the American songbook, Netflix threw a party in New York's Central Park. There was a screening of the film (newly remastered thanks to its trip to Blu-Ray) as well as a free concert featuring performances of some of the more iconic songs from the film. The show was headlined by Oscar winner and "American Idol" runner-up Jennifer Hudson, who delivered a soulful, gospel-tinged take on "Over the Rainbow," backed by a band lead by Roots drummer and "The Late Show with Jimmy Fallon" musical director Ahmir "?uestlove" Thompson.

The show also featured a performance of "If I Only Had a Brain" (the song made famous by the Scarecrow in the film) care of Julianne Hough, the dancer, singer and two-time winner of "Dancing With the Stars" (with Olympian Apolo Anton Ohno and race car driver Hélio Castroneves in consecutive seasons). Her song was not quite as memorable as Hudson's, but she still captured the delicate combination of whimsy and sadness that makes that song (and many of the tunes from "The Wizard of Oz") so excellent.

Hudson had a lot to live up to, as not only did she have the Garland version of "Over the Rainbow" to live up to, but she also had to contend with Ashanti's version, who performed the song as a cast member of the TV movie "The Muppets' Wizard of Oz." (Ashanti also made her version available on iTunes this week.) What do you think? Did Hudson create the new standard or will nothing ever top the original? Leave your thoughts in the comments.

Paramore Rock Hayley Williams? Voice Away at Cali Tour Launch

Author: Mikael Wood  //  Category: Latest Music News

Photo: Winter/Getty
Last night Paramore kicked off a month-long North American tour at the Fox Theater in Pomona, California, and though most of the band’s fans already knew that Hayley Williams had gone blonde thanks to a performance Monday on The Tonight Show, the formerly flame-haired frontwoman had another surprise up her sleeve: She’d lost her voice.

“I got sick a week ago, and I just wanna apologize to everybody — even if you think I sound cool and tough,” the 20-year-old singer announced with a rasp near the end of the hour-long show. “I guess it wouldn’t be a Paramore tour without Hayley getting sick.”

In actuality, Williams sounded fine at the Fox, where she and her bandmates (including newly permanent guitarist Taylor York) celebrated yesterday’s release of Brand New Eyes with a typically action-packed set that mixed new songs with material from Paramore’s first two albums, as well as “Decode,” the band’s goth-punk hit from last year’s Twilight soundtrack. (Before Paramore took the stage, the capacity crowd squealed in delight when Muse’s “Supermassive Black Hole,” also featured in Twilight, cropped up on the between-bands mix.) “Ignorance,” Brand New Eyes‘ lead single, thrummed with an under-pressure energy, while guitarist Josh Farro gave “That’s What You Get” a stuttered dance-rock groove. Later, Williams belted “Looking Up” with such force that it made the song’s self-referential claim — “We’re just getting started!” — seem believable for once.

Even so, when the group appeared for their encore, Williams was nowhere to be found. Farro reported sheepishly that the singer was backstage, her voice “completely shot,” then made a request he acknowledged was pretty strange: If they played the music to “Misery Business,” would we mind handling the vocals? “Sing so Hayley can hear you,” Farro added. “She’s really upset and feels like she’s letting you guys down.” Consider it a testament to the intense devotion of Paramore’s fans that no one in Pomona seemed to mind the imposition at all.

Set List:

“Intro”
“Ignorance”
“I Caught Myself”
“That’s What You Get”
“Looking Up”
“Emergency”
“CrushCrushCrush”
“Turn It Off”
“Conspiracy”
“Where the Lines Overlap”
“Decode”
“Misery Business”

On the Charts: Pearl Jam?s ?Backspacer? Locks Up Band?s First Number One Since 1996

Author: Daniel Kreps  //  Category: Latest Music News

Photo: Nedertigt/AFP/Getty
The Big News: As expected, Pearl Jam’s ninth album Backspacer stormed to the Number One spot on this week’s Billboard Top 200, selling 189,000 copies according to Neilsen SoundScan. While Backspacer gave Pearl Jam their first Number One since 1996’s No Code, the album sold roughly 90,000 less copies than its predecessor Pearl Jam did in its opening week in 2006. After two weeks at the top, Jay-Z’s Blueprint 3 nestled into Two with another 134,000 copies sold. Three Days Grace enjoyed their best debut yet as Life Starts Now reached Number Three, while Whitney Houston’s I Look to You and Miley Cyrus’ Time of Our Lives EP rounded out the Top Five.

Over on Billboard’s Top Catalog Chart, where the Fab Four and the King of Pop continue to battle it out, Michael Jackson reclaimed his top spot as Number Ones surpassed Abbey Road, which was the chart’s top seller for two consecutive weeks. The Beatles’ remasters take up 13 of the top 16 spots on the Catalog charts, with Jackson occupying the other three. Only the remaster for Yellow Submarine finds itself outside the Top 20 Catalog, coming in at 24.

Debuts: Three more artists managed to crack the Top 10, as Brand New’s Daisy, Five Finger Death Punch’s War is the Answer and Harry Connick, Jr.’s Your Songs ended up at Six-Seven-Eight respectively, even though none of the releases managed to sell over 50,000. Mika’s The Boy Who Knew Too Much bowed in at 19, while Sean Kingston — whose “Beautiful Girls” topped the Hot 100 and whose self-titled album peaked at Number Six in 2007 — saw his second album Tomorrow debut meekly at 37 with only 13,000 copies.

Last Week’s Heroes: Despite losing the top spot, The Blueprint 3 and Jay-Z proved resilient in its third week with another 100+K sales week and inevitable platinum status by this time next week. Speaking of platinum, congratulations all around to the Zac Brown Band, as The Foundation exceeded a million copies sold 45 weeks after it was released. Kid Cudi’s Man on the Moon: The End of Day could be considered the week’s biggest loser, dropping from Four to 17 thanks to a 73 percent sales decline.

Next week, we’ll find out who wins the battle of the divas: Mariah, Madonna or Paramore.

Adam Lambert’s Album Tops Amazon Charts Without Single, Title

Author: Kyle Anderson  //  Category: Latest Music News

Adam Lambert's album won't be available in stores until November 24, but you can already pre-order the record on Amazon. It currently sits at the top of the Amazon sales charts, which is not necessarily unusual for a pre-order (especially one as high-profile as an "American Idol" runner-up), but it's a slightly more amazing feat for two reasons.

First, most of the details about Lambert's album is pretty much unknown. There is no title, no single and no complete track listing yet. We do know there are a handful of producers working on the album, including Rob Cavallo, Ryan Tedder, Dr. Luke and Claude Kelly) and that the song Lambert cut for the soundtrack to the upcoming film "2012" totally blew away Queen guitarist Brian May. The buzz around Lambert is truly huge if he's able to sell an album that doesn't yet exist, and the only guarantee is that his name will appear in the sleeve.

The other thing that makes Lambert's Amazon chart dominance amazing is that he has topped a number of high-profile artists, many of whom just released new music this week. Lambert's album stands above new records from Barbara Streisand, Madonna and Mariah Carey (as well as the Beatles). Those are artists with massive followings and plenty of buzz, but clearly Lambert's fans are speaking louder. They're so desperate to hear the album that they're will to buy something that doesn't yet exist.

Dominance on the Amazon sales chart doesn't necessarily mean that the album will be massive, but clearly the anticipation for Lambert's album is massive and will only get bigger between now and the day his record drops.

Chris Brown Recruits Lil Wayne, Swizz Beatz For Comeback Single ?I Can Transform Ya?

Author: Daniel Kreps  //  Category: Latest Music News

“I Can Transform Ya,” Chris Brown’s first single reportedly off his upcoming Graffiti — and his first official new song since he assaulted Rihanna in February — was revealed yesterday on the singer’s Mechanical Dummy Website. Officially, it’s credited to Chris Brown featuring Lil Wayne and Swizz Beatz, but the producer and Weezy practically overpower the R&B singer on the song, which rumbles to a backing track featuring whistle blasts, metallic clanks and crunchy guitar riffs. Beatz delivers his most rocking, metallic beat yet, almost as if the tune was destined for Weezy’s own delayed Rebirth.

While some leaked songs suggested that Brown’s comeback single might be more reflective or apologetic in tone, instead Brown sing-raps about his ability to “transform ya” by wielding an American Express Black Card and buying some lucky girl anything she wants. Lil Wayne is in full-on alien mode and the track’s MVP, with Weezy name-checking both Optimus Prime and Voltron, possibly the first time that cartoon has been referenced in a rap since Raekwon did it on Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers).

But will radio and the clubs embrace the track following Brown’s plea deal and all the drama of the past eight months? We’ll find out soon enough. With his new single finally out, as Rolling Stone previously reported, Brown will next make his official return to the stage with an appearance at Power105’s Powerhouse concert October 27th at New Jersey’s Izod Center.

Phish Tease Fans With Halloween Cover Options: Nirvana, MGMT

Author: Daniel Kreps  //  Category: Latest Music News

Photo: Phish.com

It’s tradition for Phish to cover another artist’s classic album in its entirety on Halloween — and for fans to furiously debate which LP the band will choose in the weeks before the big show. This year, the Vermont quartet is playing along by teasing its devotees with a gallery of album covers on the official Festival 8 Website. Records that won’t be performed in Indio, California, at the end of the month are being figuratively killed off the band — stabbed with a knife or an ax (how appropriately gory).

Some of the survivors include a trio of David Bowie albums, U2’s The Joshua Tree, a pair of Zappa albums, Rolling Stones’ Sticky Fingers, Nirvana’s Nevermind, Pearl Jam’s Ten and, awesomely, Rage Against the Machine’s Evil Empire.

One of the survivors caught Rolling Stone’s eye because a reader named Mr. Right left a comment on one of our Festival 8 posts insisting, “I know a lot of you are going to hate me for spilling the beans, but they’re going to play MGMT’s Oracular Spectacular.” MGMT’s debut is indeed in the Phish shooting gallery.

And though Radiohead’s OK Computer was voted to the top of our “What Should Phish Cover for Halloween?” Rock List, it wasn’t included in the gallery. Kid A is there, however. Other Rock List suggestions, from David Bowie’s Ziggy Stardust to Michael Jackson’s Thriller to Boston’s Boston have managed to avoid the ax so far. From the onset, Rolling Stone has predicted Prince’s Purple Rain will be performed on October 31st, and it’s still among the unbloodied portraits.

So what will fans definitely not be hearing on Halloween? Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers’ Damn the Torpedos, Leonard Cohen’s I’m Your Man, Ween’s White Pepper (sadly), White Stripes’ Elephant, Huey Lewis and the News’ Sports and a couple albums by artists who have already had albums covered by Phish on past Halloweens: The Who’s Who’s Next (Quadrophenia was played), the Beatles’ Rubber Soul (White Album), Talking Heads’ Fear of Music (Remain in Light) and the Velvet Underground & Nico’s self-titled album (Loaded). No matter how awesome it would be, we can essentially guarantee that neither Michael McDonald or Hall & Oates’ Private Eyes will be played on October 31st, despite their appearance in Phish’s album art gallery.

Paul McCartney?s Historic Citi Field Stand Coming to CD/DVD

Author: Daniel Kreps  //  Category: Latest Music News

Photo: Mazur/MPL/WireImage
Earlier this summer, Paul McCartney christened Citi Field, the new home of the New York Mets, with a sold-out three-night stand in Flushing, Queens. Those shows will be the focus of an upcoming 2CD/1DVD set titled Good Evening New York City. Each night’s 33-song, two-hour-and-40-minute hits-filled set was filmed with 15 high-definition cameras, plus an additional 75 flipcams were distributed to the audience to capture all angles of McCartney’s performance. Good Evening New York City will be released on November 17th via Hear Music.

One of the Citi Field stand’s highlights was undoubtedly a cameo by Billy Joel during the opening night’s encore. Joel was returning the favor after McCartney guested at Joel’s Last Play at Shea concert, helping perform the final ever notes at Shea Stadium — a spot filled with Beatles history — before it was demolished. McCartney’s Citi shows featured a mix of solo and Wings hits, Beatles classics, new tracks from side project the Fireman and some songs resurrected to pay homage to the Fab Four’s Shea shows, like “I’m Down.”

The deluxe edition of Good Evening New York City will feature both expanded packaging and a bonus DVD of McCartney performing atop the marquee of the Ed Sullivan Theatre in New York on July 15th. While the performance was filmed for Late Show With David Letterman, the DVD will include the performance of some songs that weren’t broadcast.

Check out photos from McCartney’s special Letterman gig.

Danger Mouse, The Shins? James Mercer Explain the Birth of New Band Broken Bells

Author: Matt Diehl  //  Category: Latest Music News

When Danger Mouse and the Shins’ James Mercer met backstage at Denmark’s Roskilde festival five years ago, the unlikely duo quickly discovered a mutual fandom. “As soon as I heard the Shins, I wanted to do something with James, no matter what,” Danger Mouse explains. Their partnership took time to develop, but in March 2008, Mercer began a peripatetic recording odyssey, sequestering for weeks on end at Danger Mouse’s Los Angeles home studio. Both were coming off of a series of high-profile, high-pressure undertakings — Danger Mouse had recently finished producing Beck’s Modern Guilt, while Mercer was coming off a controversial, radical reshuffle of the Shins’ lineup. As a result, they covertly began making music that resembled nothing either of them had ever done.

The result is Broken Bells, what was until now a top-secret collaboration. Maverick musician/studio maven Danger Mouse (a.k.a. Brian Burton) explains this latest effort is no one-off art project like Dark Night of the Soul, his much-hyped joint endeavor with Sparklehorse and film director David Lynch from earlier this year. And while he’s well known for producing the likes of Gorillaz, he claims it’s not a Shins album as produced by Danger Mouse; nor is it a trading-computer-files creation à la Gnarls Barkley, his acclaimed partnership with Cee-Lo. Nope, both Danger Mouse and Mercer agree that Broken Bells is, in fact, a band. “We just didn’t get anybody else in it but ourselves,” explains Danger Mouse. “We’d never worked together before, but then we did one song and it was great.”

Danger Mouse and Mercer make all this clear as they linger between shots during a spooky late-night video shoot for Broken Bells’ first single, “The High Road”: in the clip, the duo stalks a dark desert road with flashlights, encountering surreal characters like a burlesque dancer gyrating in a wood shack. It’s an appropriate visual for sounds that might’ve been beamed in from another dimension, one where electronica textures collide with psychedelic harpsichords and eerie Pet Sounds harmonies. “It’s melodic, but experimental, too,” Danger Mouse says of Broken Bells’ upcoming, as-yet-untitled album, which will be released via Columbia in early 2010. “We experimented a lot.”

That exploratory tendency rings clear in haunting tracks like “The Ghost Inside” and especially “Sailing To Nowhere/Deviant Sister,” which forges folk-soul apocalyptica out of carnival organ, spacey sound effects and lushly layered vocals that Mercer calls the “Age of Aquarius thing.” As such, when Mercer sings about “the guts on your blouse,” it’s obvious this is the darkest material either has made yet. “That song is really murderous — there’s some really sinister, nasty shit going on in there,” Mercer says.

Danger Mouse — infamous for mashing up the Beatles with Jay-Z on his 2004 Internet bootleg sensation The Grey Album — forsook his trademark sampling for live instruments (”Everything was played live,” he says); Mercer, meanwhile, found himself expanding his vocal style, debuting soulful falsettos and a ghostly lower-register croon that had never made appearances on his previous recordings. “There are a number of times on this record where you’d never guess it’s James singing,” Danger Mouse notes. “I’m doing things I’ve never done before,” Mercer adds. “When you’re the master of your own domain, it’s easy to fall into patterns. But with this, there was a freedom to try stuff and not worry about what it would mean for this identity I’ve created. And it just sounded cool.”

“We wanted to be in our own little world for this thing,” Danger Mouse concludes, “and it worked.”

James Dean Sets A Tragic Precedent: Wake-Up Video

Author: Kyle Anderson  //  Category: Latest Music News

The image of a young male movie star dying before his time has happened so often that it has become a cliché. The landscape is littered with heartthrobs who have run headlong into tragedy and caused heartbreak for friends, family and fans. But the icon who originally set the tragic precedent was James Dean, who died in a car accident on this day in 1955. A great enthusiast of fast cars and races, Dean was test-driving a new Porsche Spyder on a California highway when college student Donald Turnupseed swerved into Dean's lane and collided with him head-on. Dean died of his injuries a few hours later, and was ironically stopped and ticketed for speeding only a few hours before his collision. Though he had only really completed three starring roles by the time he passed away, his entire filmography is considered classic canon: "Rebel Without a Cause," "East of Eden" and "Giant" (which was released after his death) earned Dean a pair of Oscar nominations for Best Actor and gave him a reputation as one of the finest actors of his generation.

Since his death, Dean has become a metaphor for tortured artists, studious actors, rebels, the sexually-liberated and thrill-seekers. He is name-checked in countless songs, films and television shows, and his movies have been parodied ad infinitum. One such tribute? Former "American Idol" judge and MC Skat Kat collaborator Paula Abdul's video for her chart-topping 1991 hit "Rush, Rush." The clip was an homage to "Rebel Without a Cause" that cast a young Keanu Reeves in the Dean role.

The numbers associated with the U2360° Tour are staggering: a 170-ton stage rightfully dubbed “the spaceship,” 200 trucks carting it around, 250 speakers, nearly 400 employees and $750,000 a day in overhead. But the band’s stadium show is more than a fantastic spectacle — it’s the biggest rock tour of all time, and Rolling Stone is onstage and backstage with U2’s Bono, the Edge, Adam Clayton and Larry Mullen Jr. as they make history in our new issue, on stands today.

Explore three decades of U2 in photos.

Sales for U2’s latest album, No Line on the Horizon, may not match their biggest blockbusters, but the foursome are out to “engage and try and do something different,” as Edge puts it, as well as prove their new material can stand up next to the classics. “I walk out and sing ‘Breathe’ every night to a lot of people who don’t know it,” Bono tells RS‘ Brian Hiatt of the No Line show opener in our cover story. “I’m a performer — I’m not going to hang on to a song that doesn’t communicate and add up to something. They’re great songs live, and I think it’s a great album.” But three-fourths of U2 (save the Edge) think “Get On Your Boots” was the wrong pick for a first single.

Read the full story in our new issue to go behind the scenes as U2 prep for their opening-night show in Chicago, tweaking “Your Blue Room” from the band’s 1995 collaboration with Brian Eno; and join them in Croatia as the Edge generates new effects presets on the fly and the band reflects on the significance of performing in the once war-torn nation for the first time since 1997.

As Rolling Stone tags along in a private jet en route to Chicago, Bono also meditates on what it means to be a rock star in 2009, praising Jay-Z as “a pioneer” who’s interested in a “porous culture, where there’s much more crosstown traffic.” He adds, “In this age of celebrity and pop stardom, maybe it’s a sensible thing to question the values of being a pop star. Radiohead, Pearl Jam, a lot of people, who maybe had more sense than us, rejected it. But the thing that’s suffered from that stance was that precious, pure thing, what they used to call the 45.”
