Taylor Swift Wants To Work With Jack White, Everybody Else

Author: Jocelyn Vena  //  Category: Latest Music News

She has performed with Def Leppard, T-Pain, Miley Cyrus, Kellie Pickler and yes, even the Jonas Brothers. While hard at work on her new album, Taylor Swift shared with MTV News how much she'd like to work with White Stripes/ Raconteurs/ Dead Weather frontman Jack White.

Given the diverse kinds of talent she's worked with over the last year, it doesn't seem that far-fetched that Taylor and White might hit up the studio sometime soon and work on some tracks. It got us searching our archives to see who else Taylor has talked about who she wants to work with (or vice versa) and we picked our favorites!

5) John Mayer: "He Twittered the other day that he wrote a song, and he wants to make it a duet with me," she said. "I freaked out when I heard, because I've been such a big fan of John for such a long time."

4) Selena Gomez: "We have talked about a duet," Selena said. "I think it would be really neat to have the country vibe."

3) T.I. and 2) Kanye West: "I'd like to do a completely off-the-wall collaboration," she said. "I would like one of my songs to be the hook to a rap song. That would be so much fun! You know, I love Kanye West and I love T.I. — he's amazing."

1) Tim McGraw: "But you know the dream for me would be Tim McGraw singing background vocals on one of my songs," she once told MTV News.

So, who would you like to see Taylor work with next? Let us know in the comments or head over to Your.MTV.com to make your voice heard!

Kanye West Angrily Blogs About ?Corny? ?King of Pop? Misquote

Author: Daniel Kreps  //  Category: Latest Music News

Photo: Wargo/WireImage
Earlier this week, a satirical Website called Scrape.TV posted a (fake) story about how, with the passing of Michael Jackson, Kanye West declared himself as the new King of Pop. For those who actually scrutinized Scrape TV and saw its other headlines (”Study Finds Silver Bullets Largely Ineffective Against Werewolves,” “Satanist Group Claims Devil Getting Bad Rap”), it was apparent from the onset that West was just being made fun of for past indiscretions involving his giant ego, like when South Park “murdered” Kanye.

However, some other media outlets picked up the story as fact, with widespread reports claiming that West was declaring himself as the “King of Pop.” Even though the story was completely debunked, Kanye finally caught wind of the King of Pop rumor today, taking to his Caps Locked blog for a rant against the false allegations:

I was just listening to Wendy Williams and heard some quote about me saying I’m the new King of Pop. Not only did I not say that, I haven’t said anything. It makes me feel bad that obviously I made people feel that I would be corny enough to say something so whack after the passing of an idol, a legend and more than that a human being with feelings and family. It scares me to think what people will believe, without even a source. Any random person can type something on the Internet and then the world believes it. I don’t talk to press or do TV or do promotions of any sort. I’ve stopped chasing and buying into fame. Fame is like cigarettes with no surgeon general warning. It destroys most people as it did to the true and only King of Pop. We exploit ourselves and eat our own egos ’till there is nothing left. I have a feeling that this won’t be the last false statement with my name on it, but this will be the last time I defend myself. I’m done.”

So there you have it, Kanye did not say he was the King of Pop. As Rock Daily previously reported, Kanye did refer to Jay-Z as our generation’s Frank Sinatra and Lady Gaga the next Madonna, but to call himself the next MJ is completely ridiculous. This isn’t the first time Kanye has been victimized by online hooligans, as Twitter imposters have also caused Kanye to blog in defense of himself.

Does Eminem’s ‘The Warning’ Go Too Far? The Oh Snap! Poll

Author: MTV News  //  Category: Latest Music News

This morning, the latest shot was fired in the beef between Eminem and Mariah Carey. Their war of words started a few years ago when rumors circulated that the two had been involved in a romantic relationship and escalated with the release of Em's "Bagpipes From Baghdad" from this year's Relapse. From there, Carey released the single "Obsessed," which also came with an accompanying video that appears to be aimed at Eminem (though Carey and husband Nick Cannon — who was also attacked in "Bagpipes From Baghdad" — have repeatedly denied that the song or video are directed at any one person). Then came this morning's dis track "The Warning," a bile-filled Em rant wherein he talks about recordings they made, recounts their supposed sexual encounter and makes several threats against her life. It's the sort of anger Slim Shady usually reserves for the likes of Ja Rule or Benzino.

It's a pretty stunning and aggressive track, though it made us wonder: Has he gone too far? We hit the streets this afternoon to poll some people to see if they thought Em had gone over the line.

The (extremely unscientific) results are in, and 61 percent of those polled thought that even though the song was extreme, it still doesn't go too far. Those respondents were very willing to let Shady off the hook — not an unreasonable stance, especially considering he has spent most of his career taking down celebrities and attacking other musicians with his lyrics. The 39 percent who thought "The Warning" was too much were mostly uncomfortable with the threats of violence. One thing that everybody could agree on, though: This feud is far from over.

In an attempt to help defray the cost of his mounting medical bills, the artists are uniting at Memphis’ Peabody Hotel Skyway for a very special show. Tickets to the event cost $125, and donations can also be made via the Paypal address FriendsOfJimDickinson@gmail.com.

‘Funny People’ Opens Today, Returns Adam Sandler To Rock Star Glory

Author: MTV News  //  Category: Latest Music News

"Funny People," the latest film from "Knocked Up" director and all-around Hollywood comedy tastemaker Judd Apatow, opens today nationwide (and is getting excellent reviews). It stars a bunch of Apatow regulars like Seth Rogen and Jonah Hill but marks the first collaboration between the director and star Adam Sandler. The accompanying movie soundtrack features a whole bunch of classic rock tunes (including a never-before-heard demo of John Lennon's "Watching the Wheels") and also contains a recording of Sandler playing the Lennon song "Real Love." Though he has long-established himself as a legitimate film star, Sandler got his start playing funny songs on "Saturday Night Live" and on several hit albums (including They're All Gonna Laugh at You and What the Hell Happened to Me?). Sandler even scored a radio hit with "The Hanukkah Song," something that finds its way onto rock radio every December.

But Sandler hasn't totally hung up his musical spurs. He performed on last year's "VH1 Rock Honors: The Who" (he shredded on "Magic Bus") and lent his axe skills to an all-star jam of Lou Reed's "Walk on the Wild Side" (along with Conan O'Brien, Jack Black and Jimmy Fallon). And at last year's MTV Movie Awards, he penned this ode to the winner of the MTV Generation Award — himself.

Kings of Leon?s ?Fire? Battles the Rain at the ?Today? Show

Author: Caitlin Wittlif  //  Category: Latest Music News

Kings of Leon brought their fiery sex to the Today show this morning, performing in a light rain that swiftly became an unfortunate downpour. Their brief set featured “Use Somebody,” “Notion” and “Sex On Fire” from the Followills’ latest album, Only By The Night. As it was live TV after all, the band wasn’t beyond a little pre-air primping (RS spied Caleb using someone’s makeup mirror to fix his hair; he pushed his bangs around, curling and re-straightening them for a few minutes until he shrugged at his friend and gave up).

The most impressive homemade sign was a two-sided poster on a stick that featured a large black-and-white picture of lead singer Caleb backed by the four bandmembers’ faces on “king” playing cards, one for each suit. In a brief interview with host Meredith Vieira in between songs, the Kings were compared with monsters of rock U2, to which Caleb responded, “Oh, wow, that’s pretty big shoes to fill… we’re still young. We’ve only had four albums, and I think we have, hopefully have a ways, a ways to go. It’s a great compliment.” Another song, after the jump:

Flashback: Weezer?s Rivers Cuomo Bottles Up Down Under

Author: Daniel Kreps  //  Category: Latest Music News

The last time Weezer featured in a Flashback, we thought it was rambunctious Alternative Nation host Kennedy that stunned Cuomo into silence, but it turns out back in the mid-1990s, Rivers just didn’t like giving interviews all that much. This time around, on a Pinkerton promotional tour in 1996, Cuomo blames his uneasiness on the show Recovery on jetlag, having flown to Australia from Los Angeles. Of course, the host doesn’t really endear himself to Cuomo by accidentally calling him “River” instead of “Rivers.” Making matters worse, the host then calls him “River Weezer” and a man in a black hoodie comes out of nowhere to hand Cuomo some yellow flowers. It’s Joaquin Phoenix-level awkwardness throughout.

Bonus Flashback: Weezer playing a new song called “Getchoo” in Boston back in 1995:

Single Minded: Jay-Z Goes Disco, Katy Perry Gets Remixed, More

Author: J. Edward Keyes  //  Category: Latest Music News

Photo: Miller/Getty
Jay-Z, “99 Problems” [Light Year Remix]
It’s unlikely that Jay will opt for this disco re-structuring of this Black Album classic at his headlining slot at All Points West tonight but, hey, who knows? Remember that one time when My Bloody Valentine played that all-bluegrass set?  That was weird.

Katy Perry, “Waking Up in Vegas” [Calvin Harris Remix]
OK, so the big problem with this Calvin Harris remix of Katy Perry’s recent chart-topper is that it makes the lyrics jump out — which is never a good look for Perry. But when the sleek track properly kicks in, it’s a tidy little dance number, its LED synths perfectly suited to Perry’s polished pout.

Eminem feat. Mariah Carey, “The Warning” [Mariah Carey Dis Track]
Well, this is certainly shaping up to be one of the weirdest feuds of the last few years. The beat is menacing and Em’s flow is as fiery and unhinged as ever — but then couple of bars he says Mariah’s name, and you realize all over again how goofy and petty and ridiculous this whole thing is.

Beerjacket, “Dancing in the Dark” [Bruce Springsteen Cover]
Sometimes simple is best: Scottish troubador Beerjacket makes Born in the USA-era Bruce sound like Devils and Dust era Bruce, stripping “Dancing” down to a few plucked chords and its timeless aching melody.

Survivor, “Eye of the Tiger” [Oh Sh*t! & Mynx Cover]
Oh shit is right — L.A. production team turns the survivor classic into something by Daft Punk, a furious, punchy, quasi-techno track with mechanized vocals. This is what is going to be playing in that inevitible YouTube clip where someone re-does every Rocky fight with Rock ‘Em Sock ‘Em Robots.

Ghostface Killah Drops Mixtape, Talks R&B LP ?Wizard of Poetry?

Author: Daniel Kreps  //  Category: Latest Music News

Photo: Nunez/WireImage
Ghostface Killah dropped a new mixtape on Imeem yesterday, collaborating with DJ Essence on RNB N Fish. The mixtape is a blend of newer, R&B-infused cuts that fans can expect to hear on Ghostdeini’s upcoming album Wizard of Poetry alongside newer versions of past hits like “Back Like That” and 30-second snippets of Ghostfaced-renditions of Beyoncé’s “Irreplaceable.” Also streaming at the Imeem site is “Baby” featuring Raheem Devaughn, the first single off Wizard of Poetry, due out September 29th according to the Island Def Jam site.

The ever-verbose Ghostface also recently sat down for an interview with New York magazine, once again providing readers with some incredible quotes that could only come from the mouth of the man they calls Tony Starks. Discussing how doing an R&B album changes the content of his rhymes, Ghostface says “I still will do that on other tracks, but this album right here is an R&B album. You can’t talk about slinging crack on an R&B album. Unless you get caught — it depends on how you say it — and your girl is gonna leave you, and she never came back, cause you were doing whatever you were doing.”

Just because Ghostface is hitting 40 next year, that doesn’t mean he’s gonna stop rapping. “You can write music till you 70. This is a hobby. B., muthafuckas always act like they retiring and don’t go nowhere. You know what it is, man. You can’t get away from it, B,” Ghostface tells New York. “You don’t think Michael Jordan wants to pick up the ball sometimes? But that’s what it is. That’s why a boxer always keep coming back, like Muhammad Ali, until he just kept getting his ass beat. Until you realize, I just ain’t got it no more.” Ghostface will also feature prominently on Raekwon’s new album Only Built 4 Cuban Linx II, so we’ll be hearing plenty more from the Wallabee Champ by year’s end.

Dave Matthews Band to Give Away Cruise to Private Island Concert

Author: Daniel Kreps  //  Category: Latest Music News

Photo: Coffrini/AFP/Getty
Depressed that John Mayer’s Mayerboat cruise has been docked while he records his new album? Dave Matthews Band might have the cure, as the Big Whiskey crew have launched a new contest that will allow some lucky fans to take a four-day cruise to a small Caribbean island to see DMB perform live. Contest entry forms are up now at the Big Dave Matthews Band Cruise Getaway Sweepstakes Website.

The small pack of winners will receive round-trip airfare and a cabin for two aboard the Bud Light Port Paradise ship, which departs for the Bahamas on October 23rd. After a stop in Nassau, the winners will be whisked away on October 25th to the tiny Coco Cay, a private island that’s less than a mile wide, so they can guzzle down pina coladas while the Dave Matthews Band perform in a pretty amazing setting. Then, it’s back to your landlocked reality. You need to be 21 to enter, considering this is Bud Light-sponsored.

Before Dave Matthews and the rest of the band can go on their tropical vacation, DMB still has two more months of touring to do in support of Big Whiskey & the GrooGrux King, including stops at the Outside Lands Festival and Farm Aid. Additionally, Dave Matthews Band will also appear on tonight’s episode of The Late Show of David Letterman after performing on the Monday, July 27th episode.

Eminem’s ‘The Warning’ Gets Shady Back Into The Business Of Beef

Author: MTV News  //  Category: Latest Music News

Eminem's beef with Mariah Carey and Nick Cannon escalated earlier today when his latest dis track "The Warning" was unleashed on the masses. The bile-filled rant was recorded in response to Carey's "Obsessed," which most people believed was about the rapper even though both her and husband Cannon have categorically denied that that song and video are aimed at the man born Marshall Mathers. "The Warning" represents a return to beef for Eminem, which was a cornerstone of his early career. In spite of (or perhaps because of) his staggering success, the early part of his career always saw him involved in some public feud or another, be it with the Insane Clow Posse, Christina Aguilera, Ja Rule, Benzino or Everlast.

But in 2004, Eminem very publicly decided that he was going to put beef to rest for good. In an interview with MTV News' Sway, Em discussed the nature of his feuds and how easily they escalated. "We started inheriting each other's beef," he told Sway. "50 inherited mine, so now he can't be on the cover of The Source magazine 'cause I got this beef over here. He's being attacked by Ja. Ja is saying things about me, then all of a sudden comes out and says a line about my daughter — and when it got to that level, that's when it got crazy to me. That's when it got crazy. But 'Toy Soldiers' is a song saying how serious the beef can get, and people can die over this sh--." Indeed, the track and video "Like Toy Soldiers" (from 2004's Encore) attempts to put everything to rest and allow for all parties to walk away with dignity.

But now Eminem is back on the offensive, taking down Carey and Cannon on the Relapse track "Bagpipes From Baghdad" and now with "The Warning." It seems as though he's reversed his stance from a few years back. "You know, we're not really looking to start no beef," he told Sway. "We're usually not the beef-starters, despite the little stabs taken at pop singers and all that stuff. That's not real beef; that's ha-ha-ha funny." It seemed like this particular feud started out in the "ha-ha-ha" mode, and considering the savagery of "The Warning," let's hope it remains that way.

Foo Fighters? Dave Grohl Gets His Own Alley in Ohio Hometown

Author: Shirley Halperin  //  Category: Latest Music News

Photo:Granitz/WireImage
In 2006, Oklahoma City named an alley after its favorite freaky sons the Flaming Lips, last month it was announced that Run-DMC will lay claim to the corner of 205th Street and Hollis Avenue in Queens when it’s rechristened “Run-DMC JMJ Way,” and this Saturday, the city of Warren, Ohio, will honor Dave Grohl with a street of his own. According to local Website http://www.tribtoday.com/page/content.detail/id/525384.html?nav=5021" target="blank">Trib Today, Grohl is expected to show for the festivities and has apparently requested an acoustic guitar and two drum kits be provided as part of his one-day rider.

The Foo Fighters frontman and former Nirvana drummer was born in Warren and still has family in the area, though he moved to Alexandria, Virginia, at a very young age. Late last year, the Warren city council successfully petitioned to rename downtown’s Market Alley “David Grohl Alley,” and in honor of the dedication, the town is hosting a week-long “Music is Art” festival. It’s also invited local artists to paint murals along the alley walls in a tribute to Grohl’s musical career (see pics here).

The naming ceremony, which serves as the festival’s finale, is scheduled for 5:45 p.m. on Saturday afternoon. Go to Mainstreetwarren.org for more info.

Nine Inch Nails? Trent Reznor Explains Why He Left Twitter

Author: Daniel Kreps  //  Category: Latest Music News

Photo: Kravitx/FilmMagic

Trent Reznor has made a brief return to social networking, hitting up the safe confines of his NIN.com message boards to tell fans why he left the savage world of Twitter. As Rock Daily previously reported, Reznor unceremoniously deleted his Twitter account a few weeks back with no explanation. Prior to the deletion, Reznor talked about ditching Twitter because, simply, “Idiots rule.” As Reznor reiterated in his NIN.com post, it was the trolling that made Twitter insufferable for him and caused the sudden end of @trent_reznor.

“Yes, I deleted my account and I’ll explain why since somehow someone apparently thinks this is newsworthy,” Reznor writes. (Ed. Note: Guilty.) “Around the time news broke of my engagement, a faction of troublemakers showed up whose sole intent was to disrupt, harass, insult and incite.” Reznor recently announced his engagement to West Indian Girl singer Mariqueen Mandaag, and writes that his Twitter was reply-spammed with harassing responses — everything from racist slurs to wishes he would overdose. “YES — I could (and did) block them,” he notes, “but everyone else reading my replies sees ALL of that nonsense.” Reznor goes on to write that the faulty Replies function, or the @, allowed for a constant spamming that eventually inundated his account.

But the real breaking point came following the death of Eric De La Cruz, a fan for whom Reznor helped raise nearly a million dollars to fund a heart transplant. Reznor pinpoints one person who wrote “someone got balls at last! Hey, can I have some of that #Eric money? The dude’s dead, he doesn’t need it lol.” Since all #Eric posts appear on the WeLoveEric Website, Reznor had to explain to De La Cruz’s sister Veronica that that’s the sad state of Twitter.

“It depresses me to think my art and life’s work can attract this kind of scum, and trying to explain to Veronica why someone would stoop to that level of ignorance for attention — and it’s someone that because of me is in her world causing her pain… well, it sucks,” Reznor writes. “If that was your intention you trolling, cowardly pigs — you’ve succeeded.”

In other NIN news, Trent reiterated that just because this is the final Nine Inch Nails tour, that doesn’t mean it’s the end of Nine Inch Nails. Rather, “I am NOT stopping making music or working on things — NIN is just not touring anymore. Nin.com will remain active and alive with lots of updates planned,” Reznor writes.

Eminem Issues ?Warning? to Mariah Carey With New Dis Track

Author: Daniel Kreps  //  Category: Latest Music News

You didn’t really think Eminem would sit silently as Mariah Carey dressed up like a joke Shady and mocked him in the “Obsessed” video, did you? Eminem, with a little assistance from a big-time Dr. Dre beat, has fired back at Carey and her husband Nick Cannon, completely eviscerating the Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel singer on a new dis track called “The Warning,” Rap Radar reports. “I’m obsessed now? Oh gee, is that supposed to be me in the video with the goatee,” Em raps. “Wow Mariah, I didn’t expect her to go balls out. Bitch, shut the fuck up before I put all them phone calls out you made to my house when you was wild n’ out before Nick.” Shockingly, that’s one of the more innocuous lines in Em’s three-and-a-half minute diatribe, which features Carey samples towards the latter third of the song.

While Mariah and Nick Cannon continue to assert that “Obsessed” isn’t about Eminem, Slim Shady wastes no time being coy. So why is this “The Warning” and not “The Attack”? Because despite how damning the song is, Eminem hints there’s much more for Mariah to be scared of than just a diss track. “Enough dirt on you to murder you, this is what the fuck I do. Mariah, it ever occur to you that I still have pictures,” Em raps. In true Eminem fashion, Marshall Mathers deprecates himself while attacking Carey, telling stories of premature ejaculation, dry humping, “trying to stick two CD’s in the same spot” and other personal details you’d usually expect from an unauthorized biography. Nothing gets Eminem going quite like beef, and Shady is more sharp and on-point here than on some of Relapse.

Of course, it was Eminem who fired the most recent opening salvo at Carey and Cannon with his Relapse song “Bagpipes from Baghdad,” which resulted in Carey responding with The-Dream and Tricky Stewart-produced “Obsessed.” “Why you so obsessed with me? Lyin’ that you’re sexin’ me,” Carey sang in the comparably meek (though very catchy) single. “You’re delusional, boy you’re losing your mind.” Carey later dressed up like Eminem for the song’s music video. In 2001, the pair reportedly dated briefly as Carey worked on Charmbracelet. In 2005, Eminem revived the issue by playing a portion of alleged voicemail messages Carey left him before performing “Puke” live, and tossed references to the star into “Superman” and “When the Music Stops” on The Eminem Show. A year later, he went off on Mariah on his Shade45 satellite radio station.

“Obsessed” has already begun to recede from the charts, though Mariah recently released a second video for the song’s Gucci Mane remix. Carey has yet to respond to Eminem’s “Warning” on her Twitter page.

Happy Birthday, J.K. Rowling: Wake-Up Video

Author: Kyle Anderson  //  Category: Latest Music News

In what is fast becoming a Wake-Up Video tradition, today we celebrate the birth of somebody attached to the worldwide phenomenon that is the "Harry Potter" book and movie franchise. Today's birthday is significant, because without this person, the whole of "Potter" wouldn't exist. It is, of course, writer J.K. Rowling's birthday today, so if you pass the British novelist in the street today, congratulate her on being 44 years young. She's had a hell of a run, having turned stories she made up for the benefit of her children into a billion dollar industry that is mostly based around books, which is nothing short of staggering in the 21st century.

Of all the wonderful cameos in the "Harry Potter" movies, the greatest was Jarvis Cocker's appearance in "Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire." Cocker, the former frontman of British class-warfare rockers Pulp, appears as the singer of the Weird Sisters, the musical entertainment for the Yule Ball. The Weird Sisters (also containing members of Radiohead and Add N to X) play the song "Do the Hippogriff" in one of the wackier scenes in the series' history (though it's hard not to be charmed by a lyric like "Boogie down like a unicorn"). While he's something of a folk hero in his native England, Cocker's popularity in the United States has always been a bit spotty (not surprising, considering Pulp's particular brand of Britpop was heavily steeped in the British class system and relied a lot on slang), but he's been making progress as a solo artist. He's put out two albums (including this year's Steve Albini-produced Further Complications), and has even produced a memorable video in "Don't Let Him Waste Your Time." So toast J.K. Rowling, shake a bit to Jarvis and have a happy Friday.
